A Trip to the Idaho Falls Zoo [Photo Album]

September 28th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in My Life, My Photography

Hello Family and Friends!

It has been a fairly boring past few weeks, so in order to treat the boredom, we decided to head to the Idaho Falls, ID Zoo.  When we got there, there was traffic galore and we had to fight for a parking spot.  We didn’t expect it to be busy at all when we left, but there was actually a fair or something going on that day as well as free admissions to the zoo.  So, we were thankful for that opportunity to check it out.  Needless to say, it was completely packed and we didn’t get to enjoy a lot of the exhibits because we felt as if we were being rushed.  Oh well.  Qeirstyn still really enjoyed it as she got to pet a goat, a donkey, and some boars.  She really enjoyed seeing the monkeys jump around as well while she made her monkey sound.  Anyways, I hope you enjoy the pictures! You may notice that the focus was a little off for some of the pictures, but that’s okay because you still get the idea!

Love,
Derek, Heather, and Qeirstyn Hildreth

September 28th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Computers/Tech, Linux, My Interests

This guide is intended to give a brief, but complete tutorial aimed towards users who enjoy an easy, graphical walk-through on downloading, installing, and using calc2LaTeX to convert a OpenOffice 2.4 Calc spreadsheet to something that LaTeX will recognize.  There’s nothing wrong with creating your tables directly in LaTeX, but sometimes the tables can be quite complicated to code. That’s where calc2LaTeX comes in really handy.  So, let’s get to it…

Web 2.0 and Beyond to Web 2.5 [Research]

September 27th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Computers/Tech, My Interests

The following is a research project that I had the opportunity to conduct as undergraduate research for the BYU-Idaho Linux/Unix Society.  There was both an oral presentation as well as a scientific write-up.  I have made these available for download on my homepage at derekhildreth.com in the Portfolio Section, and I would also like to make them available here.  They are available as OpenOffice documents and PDF files.  Choose from the links below the abstract:

Abstract
The Internet is growing at astounding rates and so are the programs and tools that it uses. This report offers a look into the new and exciting advancements the Internet is making and designates it with a version number not unlike programs do when they evolve on the desktop environment. O’Reilly Media popularized a definition of the evolving Internet as “Web Version 2.0” back in 2004 and has grown to become one of the biggest “buzzwords” found on the Internet.

September 27th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Computers/Tech, My Interests, My Life

The following is a research paper that I completed a couple of years ago for a class at BYU-Idaho.  I feel that this is worth a spot on my blog as I am proud of any research project that I have completed.  I hope that you enjoy the informative read on my findings of how technology can actually decrease learning capability if not used properly.  Read on…
