Fun with Photo Mosaics

October 21st, 2007 Posted in Computers/Tech, My Life, Ubuntu Linux

I got a real kick out of this program I stumbled upon called metapixel. You’ve seen these types of pictures before in art galleries and such, but some programmer out there figured out how to make it easy on the rest of us! Here are some of the results that I got from a collection of 1,880 photos. Enjoy!

Mosaics

To get the best experience, after clicking on the album link “Mosaics”, download the photos one by one so you can get the full resolution images and zoom into each of the smaller photos. If you can’t, consider settling for the online Slideshow!

If you’re interested on how to create these yourself, I’ve written a tutorial located here: How To Make Great Photo Mosaics with Metapixel.

Those mosaic pictures are really neat to look at. There are pictures in there that I’ve never seen before. This reminds me of a puzzle I got Heather for Christmas one year of Mickey Mouse.

I managed to get as far as creating the photomosaic - i get an error message “cannot read image ‘imagename.png’ ” Do you know what I’m doing wrong? I can send a screen shot if it would help -

    @ Paul:

Is “imagename.png” the input or output file?

If it’s the output file, then I’m not sure what could be going wrong. Maybe try it with the .jpg extension instead of the .png.

If it’s the input file, it might be complaining that it can’t find it. You need to make sure that you’re in the same directory as the file when you enter the commands on the command line.

Otherwise, I’m not really sure what would be happening.
